Can We Adopt if We Are Not Married?

Question by getting bigger: Can we adopt if we are not married?
We live in wisconsin and we were wondering if we can adopt my boyfriend’s 12 year old neice.ok this will be kind of a long story also a sad one.But we have his neice every few weeks and its come to a point that when we get her we have to check her head for headlice and she always has it.So we spend $ 50 everytime and run out to get stuff to treat her hair, the car her clothes,my house well let me get back to the begining.her mother is the type of person noone cares for and she is one of them mothers that you think to yourself why is she even a mother?Well she was caught smoking crack in front of this girl when she was 7 years old and thats where it all began. We called social service way back then they took the little girl away and a week later after the mother went thru some classes she got all her kids back, which no one was happy about.Well the next thing that happened was she was driving to milwaukee and was using her kids to stash drugs on them.Well now it has gotten worse and nothing seems to be working.Everytime we get this little girl she comes to use with brusies all over her body and head for a headlice and we use to call social service everytime the little girl was with us till the mother and her boyfriends kept beating this little girl we have called the police numorus times and they are not helping either.i feel so bad for this girl that i cry when she is not around because in front of her i have to be strong. But now it seems like this little girl is pushing everyone away she doesn’t want anyone to know anything anymore due to her always getting beat and god knows what else. she seems distant from everyone and everything and you can see big hand marks all over her arms and legs. i dont know what else to do. The father of this little girl is locked up in prison till 2014 the father is my boyfriend’s brother. But we want to know if we can adopt her untill she is 18 or something even tho we are not married?there is alot more going on but its real hard to wwrite down but hopefully this will help

I find it hard to believe that social services hasn’t removed her from the house if the mother is a drug addict, moving drugs and beats her child. Not that I think you are lying but someone is DEFINITELY not doing their job.

Document everything with pictures and dates. If you are talking to the same social worker ask to speak to another one, and don’t stop until you get this little girl out of that house! No one should have to live like that…I don’t care if thats her mother, they are a family…that isn’t love! No one should have to face beatings everyday. Call the police if you have to. She needs to know she is better than that, she is more loved than that.
