IS Having a Drink Addiction the Same Thing as Having a Drug Addiction?
by SS&SS
Question by angel: IS having a drink addiction the same thing as having a drug addiction?
I’m just curious because this guy that killed himself in his room had a drinking problem and was suffering alcholoism. His wife didn’t care about him, neither did the people at work. His wife cheated on him. So, I found the book he was reading and inside the book it had the 12 principles of AA, its so depressing.
So. I’m curious is AA the same thing as drug rehab? Explain.

Yeah it’s the same thing, but alcohol addiction is much more of a genetic thing – some people are almost incapable of becoming addicted to alcohol, whereas others are almost naturally “born” alcoholics – a few drinks and they’re addicted. I think this is why alcoholism is classified as a mental disorder.
The difference between heroin addiction, for example, and alcoholism, is that ANYONE can easily get addicted to heroin. With alcohol, it’s a genetic thing in your brain which makes you vulnerable to becoming addicted. Some people can drink for years and years and never become addicted, whereas others will be addicted within a month of first trying alcohol.

Well there is also NA (Narcotics Anonymous). The AA concept is based on using those 12 steps and requires faith in God as one of them. It seems like most Rehabs for any kind of substance or chemical addiction use the 12 steps as a part of their program, but there are definitely rehab programs out there that do not use the 12 step AA style approach. On the side note, alcohol is a drug and being addicted alcohol is just a more socially acceptable form of drug addiction.
