What’s the significance of the FDA’s approval of Truvada to prevent HIV transmission? – In what some experts are calling a “game-changing” endorsement by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the commonly used HIV drug Truvada is now approved for preventing HIV. The drug was already approved for treating people infected with HIV, and it is also already prescribed “off-label” for preventing HIV. Bradley Hare, MD is an Associate Professor of Clinical Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Medical Director of the UCSF Positive Health Program at San Francisco General Hospital and Trauma Center (SFGH)
